The Scheduler is a system which runs on the CPU in order to optimize the performance of the CPU. Its primary function is to increase the process execution rate by removing unneeded processes from memory. It also helps the process to go back into memory after it has completed its tasks. Medium term scheduler is used for swapping out and in processes. It can perform the task of launching the applications and documents on the CPU at the desired time.
The most common scheduling strategy uses the shortest job first strategy. It involves arranging the processes in the order of shortest processing time. It involves interrupting the running process and placing it in a queue, which creates excess overhead. The shortest job first strategy makes use of the information about the processing time of incoming processes. However, it has a disadvantage, as it divides the process into two distinct computing blocks. The Scheduler can be manipulated using preferences or any of the above mentioned concerns.
The Scheduler is used to prioritize the processes and their priorities. The priority of a process determines the processing order. If a process is high priority, it will be interrupted by a lower-priority thread. If a thread is low priority, the preemptive thread manager will run the scheduler instead. A non-preemptive scheduler will not interrupt the low-priority job. It will let the low-priority job finish.
